Knowledge of epilepsy differs significantly, with social factors and self-help group membership having independent effects. A nurse-run clinic reduced the risk of depression for people with no recent epilepsy attack, but knowledge levels were not affected. This does not exclude the potential for patients learning more about epilepsy; it may be useful to suggest that patients join self-help groups early on.
