Seventy-eight patients with hiatal hernia (partial thoracic stomach) and five cases of chalasia were identified by radiological examination from July 1971 through March 1973. The cases could be divided into two distinct groups: a larger group in which the clinical findings correlated with the radiologic findings and a smaller group in which there was no correlation. Both groups were followed and analyzed. The incidence of secondary esophageal stricture was similar to that reported in the foreign literature, indicating that the true incidence of hiatal hernia in American children is much higher than previously believed.
