Advances in medical technology were considered by one London teaching district to be one of the factors which could affect the outcome of their strategic plan to centralize acute medical care on two hospital sites and develop more broadly based community services. A study using the Delphi method was undertaken to identify potential areas of development in medical technology over the next 20 years. The results indicate a wide range of possible advances which could have major consequences for health care delivery and raise a variety of social, ethical, legal and economic issues.
