When applied to the mass spectrum of argon, the techniques of Aston banding and I.P. curve comparison reveal the presence of metastable states of Ar + near the ionization threshold of Ar ++ . These metastable states make possible the collision charge-exchange reaction 10/20 with an over-all cross section at 1 kev of a least 2.5 Å 2 .
