The use of refined methodology, such as isoelectrofocusing (IEF), cation exchange high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), and reversed phase HPLC, as procedures for testing for the possible presence of hemoglobin (Hb) abnormalities has recently led to the detection of several new variants. This was again the case with Hb Zengcheng which was observed when a large batch of cord blood samples from Chinese newborns was tested by IEF and reversed phase HPLC
