A N unparalleled advantage of the mold Neurospora in genetic studies is the orderly arrangement of the ascospores in an ascus. The products of a single meiotic event are arranged in a linear mw. By isolating the spores in order, a given locus may be mapped in relation to the centromere of the chromosome. A high frequency of second division segregations indicates that the locus is far removed from the centromere, whereas a low frequency signifies that the locus is near the centromere
