Abstract The hydrodynamic behavior of flexible chain macromolecules in dilute solution subjected to flow in a general velocity field is analyzed. A system of subchains with internal viscosity is used as a molecular model. On the basis of the general theory, the dependence of average deformation, orientation, and polarization characteristics of solutions upon the velocity gradient components, the internal viscosity parameter ρ , and time, is discussed for some simple and composite velocity fields.
