Abstract

The undesirable side effects that sometimes occur when dewatering for construction or mining are presented, including: ground settlement due to dewatering; deterioration of timber piling; depletion of ground water supplies; salt water intrusion; expansion of contaminant plumes; release of polluted ground water into the environment; damage to wetlands; sinkholes. Conditions where such side effects may occur are described. Methods are given for preventing side effects by restricting the influence of dewatering with ground water cutoffs and artificial recharge. Legal and contractual implictions are discussed.
