Summary It is shown that for a thin wire buried at finite depth in a semi-infinite homogeneous medium and subject to a disturbance at a given frequency, there exists an exponential attenuation of the current in the wire with a propagation constant equal to that of the medium. This result is extended to a medium with a number of layers, and to a wire lying in an interface.
