Abstract

The primary purpose of this report is to define and explain the design criteria used by Soletanche for permanent ground anchors, particularly in its most advanced form, the IRP anchor, which can be regrouted after installation is complete, if necessary to improve its capabilities. Details are given for various types of anchor load and proof testing. The Soletanche design procedure, using computer programs to optimize ground anchor support system, is explained in detail, using actual printouts of these computer programs, as used for a sample problem furnished by the FHWA. Finally, three case histories were chosen from Soletanche files to illustrate ground anchor design in differing conditions. Companion reports on the design of permanent ground anchors are: FHWA/RD-81/151 Nicholson Design Criteria; and FHWA/RD-81/152 Stump Design Criteria. (FHWA)
