P. carinii and Mycobacterium tuberculosis were the commonest causes of disease among sputum AFB smear-negative, HIV-positive adults presenting to Mulago Hospital. Pulmonary Kaposi's sarcoma and pyogenic bacteria occurred with less frequency.
