Human embryonic stem cells (HESCs) have great potential in regenerative medicine and provide a window on early human embryonic development. In their Perspective, Brivanlou and colleagues review our current understanding of the cellular, molecular, and embryological properties of HESCs and suggest how standardized measures could be used to facilitate comparison across different human embryonic cell lines.
