Abstract

Advances in surgical technique, immunosuppression and antimicrobial prophylaxis have resulted in significantly reduced morbidity and mortality following organ transplantation. As a result, transplantation is currently considered the definitive therapy for individuals with end-organ failure. Despite these advances, unexpected transmission of infections from the donor to the recipient remains a rare complication of transplantation; when it does occur, the event is frequently associated with significant morbidity and mortality (1,2).
