Abstract

Abstract Vitamin A deficiency in rat small intestine caused a decrease in the synthesis of a fucose-containing glycopeptide (Fuc-glycopeptide) and a reduction in goblet cells. The cellular localization of Fuc-glycopeptide was studied by the indirect fluorescent antibody technique. Fuc-glycopeptide was purified as previously described. Its purity was confirmed by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and the agar immunodiffusion test. An antiserum to Fuc-glycopeptide was prepared in chickens and was used to localize the Fucglycopeptide by the indirect immunofluorescence technique. Fuc-glycopeptide was present only in the goblet cells.
