It is necessary to determine the repeated load deformation characteristics of various aggregate types commonly used as ballast to: (1) Improve ballast specifications; (2) develop effective track maintenance programs including costmaintenance models; (3) obtain parameters for design and analysis; and (4) provide a means of permanent deformation and degradation ranking (i.e., load ranking) of various ballast materials.
