Summary The association of α-1-fetoprotein in the serum of patients with primary hepatocellular carcinoma provides another possible parameter for both diagnosis and evaluation of the disease process. A technique for the quantitative measurement of this protein has been devised that uses the method of electroimmunodiffusion. This technique has greater sensitivity and is faster than radial diffusion with antibody in agar. Serums from 75 patients with hepatomas were measured for α-fetoprotein, and these varied from 0.35 to 4950 eg/ml.
