Abstract

Rising food prices have become a growing concern
\nglobally and in southern Africa. In South
\nAfrica, where food availability is not an issue
\nat present, the response has been to try to improve
\naccess to food, mostly through the provision
\nof grants and food aid (e.g. school feeding
\nschemes). There is a lesser emphasis on widening
\nthe base of food production, since the dominant
\nidea is that the existing system is able to meet
\nfood needs. This report widens the debate about
\nfood production and distribution in South Africa
\nto consider some of the entrenched power dynamics
\nthat shape the way these happen, and to
\nconsider whether a more radical transformation
\nof the agro-food system is required to ensure adequate
\naccess to food for all.
