In this paper, a novel communication scheme, which uses short range MIMO transmission, is introduced and evaluated. In this scheme, two facing array antennas are placed closely within the severalfold distance of the aperture width. When the distance between the transmitting and receiving array antennas is short enough, the array antenna with the optimally narrow element spacing can give high signal-to-noise ratio, and fairly low spatial correlation. It is found that the channel capacity with the optimal antenna spacing is higher than the ergodic capacity of the i.i.d. channel since the near-field MIMO scheme has a high similarity with a parallel data transmission.
