The reaction between bromine and liquid ammonia has been reinvestigated at a temperature of −78° C. There is an equilibrium of two bromine‐nitrogen compounds: of yellow NH 2 Br which could be isolated in pure state, and of a violet compound of the composition NBr 3 · 6 NH 3 . The reaction order of decomposition of both compounds has been determined in liquid ammonia at −78° C. NH 2 Br solved in NH 3 reacts probably as a proton donor to give free NHBr − ‐ions.
