ABSTRACT Alcohol abuse and alcoholism are significant problems among Southeast Asians resettled in the United States. Contributing factors include experiences of trauma during the refugee and resettlement experience and traditional beliefs about alcohol as a health-promoting substance. The need for routine screening for alcohol and other drug problems is highlighted and culturally sensitive assessment and intervention methods are described. Clinical vignettes illustrate assessment issues.
