Providencia, a PGPR with biocontrol potential elicits defense enzymes in wheat

Plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPRs) were tested for their efficacy to elicit plant defense enzymes in wheat (Titicum aestivum) at ear stage under field conditions. A significant enhancement was observed in the defense enzyme activities in the homogenates prepared from wheat leaves. Providencia sp. (AW5) alone and with combination of Bacillus sp. (AW1) and Brevundimonas sp. (AW7) showed 42.5 - 56.9% increase in Peroxidase (PO) and Polyphenol oxidase (PPO) activities simultaneously, and a two fold increase in Phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL) activity as compared with the non-inoculated control plants. These results revealed that Providencia sp (AW5) alone as well as in combination with AW1 and AW7 was found the potential to increase defense enzymes in wheat plant under field conditions.
