Abstract Ferulic acid (= 4‐hydroxy‐3‐methoxycinnamic acid) was condensation polymerized at temperatures between 0 and 50°C in bulk or various solvents, using thionyl chloride as activator in the presence or absence of bases. Depending on reaction conditions, true relative yields up to 100% and reduced viscosities (at 0,005 g/mL solute concentration) up to 96 mL/g were observed. The polycondensation follows a 2‐stage kinetics.
