Abstract

A theory of transition from laminar to turbulent flow is developed from some new observations of the transition phenomena. Every point of a body is turbulent a fraction of the time, and a formula is derived for this fraction in a phenomenological manner. Application of the theory to available flat plate data gives some insight into observed effects and shows the way to additional experimental results required.
