Limit Analysis of Plane Problems in Soil Mechanics

Abstract

Limit analysis has been the principal method of strength analysis in soil mechanics since the year 1776 when Coulomb (1) published his classic paper on lateral earth pressures. This fact is rather startling when it is remembered that the foundations for an acceptable theory of plastic deformation were not laid until about a century later by Tresca, Saint- Vernant, and Levy.
