Abstract One of the developments in musicology in the last ten to twenty years has been the application of critical models derived from literary criticism to music. The results of these new approaches to music and musicology have been uneven. This book provides a wide variety of methods and goals in applying and adapting these critical methods to music, so providing another step in this emerging discussion. It is a wonderful resource for both the novice and the experienced musicologist who are coming to terms with the questions and issues surrounding gender and music. The experienced reader will find the working out of these ideas to be revelatory, challenging and thought-provoking. The novice will find in the footnotes a fairly extensive survey of the major articles and books published to date in this field.
