A simple idealised model of a jackup unit allowing estimations of foundation loads is described. Results of theoretical and experimental investigations of the behaviour of spudcan foundations under combined loads on sand are presented. A simple equation describing the limiting yield surface for such foundations under combined loads is presented, with experimental evidence from centrifuge model tests that show the shape is approximately correct.
