Magnetic susceptibility: Distinguishing anthropogenic effects from the natural

Abstract

Two possible approaches to separating anthropogenic from natural (geological and pedogenic) causes of variations in magnetic susceptibility are examined, the first using χmax and fractional conversion data, and the second based on the relationship between topsoil and subsoil magnetic susceptibility. Results presented from three contrasted sites in the UK suggest that the first approach, used in conjunction with stepwise multiple regression analysis, has considerable potential and should be incorporated routinely in magnetic susceptibility surveys. A recommended sampling and analytical strategy is suggested for fractional conversion work. The second approach is applicable only under restricted site and soil conditions, and has limited potential when used independently of fractional conversion studies.
