Abstract

This study of the functioning of
\\nthe National Rural Employment
\\nGuarantee Scheme between
\\nFebruary 2006 and July 2009 in
\\nBirbhum district, West Bengal
\\nreveals that in order to serve as
\\nan effective \\xe2\\x80\\x9cemployer of last
\\nresort\\xe2\\x80\\x9d, the programme should
\\nprovide proportionately more
\\njob-days during the agricultural
\\nlean season and wages should be
\\npaid in a timely manner.
