Abstract The oncogenic purine derivative, guanine 3-oxide, was oxidized at position 8, and the N-oxide function was reduced by the rat, leading to 8-hydroxyguanine 3-oxide, 8-hydroxy-guanine, and guanine. A small amount was deaminated to 3-hydroxyxanthine. The guanine formed gave rise to some labeling of the purine bases of the RNA and DNA. There was no evidence of significant incorporation of guanine 3-oxide-8-14C into RNA.
