Abstract

Determination of the characteristics that are overrepresented in work-zone crashes would provide direction to safety-enhancement efforts. In this article, 'typical' work-zone characteristics and the differences between work-zone and nonwork-zone crashes are highlighted in order to identify some issues that are special or different about work-zone crashes. In this way, potential approaches to improving work-zone safety may be selected. Computerized crash data from the states of Alabama (1994-98), Michigan (1996-98), and Tennessee (1996-97), was used.
