Keeping in view of the drawbacks of earlier methods in determining aroma, a new method which involves simple treatment of any plant part with dilute KOH for a short period has been developed. This is a very simple, rapid and highly reliable technique for determination of scent in all plant parts. Using this technique, the mode of its inheritance has been reviewed and the earlier notion on the distribution pattern of scent in various plant parts modified. The usefulness of this technique in quality control of basmati rice and in ensuring genetic purity in seed production plots has been discussed.
