<div class="htmlview paragraph">The composition of a burned mixture of air and hydrocarbons must reflect the air-fuel ratio of the original mixture. This paper shows that the air-fuel ratio can be calculated by an equation that involves only fuel composition and exhaust gas composition. For this calculation, the hydrocarbon content of the combusted mixture has been measured with a flame ionization detector as a carbon counter.</div>
