High-frequency, high-intensity pulsed magnetic fields were used in an experimental program to produce leak proof fuel pin end closures on stainless steel and nickel base alloys. Metallographic examination of these solid state welds between thin walled fuel pin cladding tubes and end plugs showed a wavy or rippled appearance which is characteristic of high velocity impact bonding. Leak tests and mechanical tests showed that the end closure welds were leak proof and stronger than the cladding tube material.
