Abstract

Likely developments awaiting the science and technology
\nof next-generation lithium batteries form the focus
\nof this article. New anode materials based on nanostructured
\ncarbons and lithium-alloying metals, novel
\neco-friendly cathode materials, safe and non-flammable
\naprotic electrolytes, and polymer electrolytes are
\ndiscussed. Possible scenarios for improvements in existing
\nor presumed battery active materials are suggested.
\nAdvances in the science and technology of lithium batteries
\nare previewed with a prognosis of challenges
\nand opportunities in the development of marketable
\nmaterials and products.
