Abstract This review describes the reviews and the reviewing media in which books and nonprint materials are discussed. The studies of book reviews and reviewing is divided into five sections: the reviews themselves and the role of reviewing media, the reviewing of adult trade books, the reviewing of juvenile titles, comparative studies of the reviewing media, and the reviewers. Research in nonprint reviewing is subdivided into four sections: the reviewing of nonprint materials in general, the reviewing of filmstrips, the reviewing of film and video, and the reviewing of sound recordings. Within each the findings are summarized and common patterns indicated. The contrast in knowledge base between the reviewing of books and nonprint media is demonstrated.
