Abstract Mechanical properties of cellulosics were calculated taking into account a two‐phase system of crystalline and non‐crystalline regions and a contiguity parameter as a mechanical coupling variable according to McCullough et al. In doing so, the simplified orientational averaging procedure has been shown to be valid also for crystal symmetries lower than orthorhombic. Performance maps were derived to demonstrate the dependence of longitudinal and transverse Young's moduli as well as the axial and transverse shear moduli on crystallinity, on crystalline and non‐crystalline orientation and on the contiguity factor as an additional materials design parameter.
