This paper describes a method for determining real time travel times on motorways. The basic principle of the method is described first, followed by an evaluation of the errors involved. The methods used to re-calibrate the system to remove such errors is then presented. The method is validated using real data. The influence of ramps and the distance between measuring sites is also evaluated. The results showed that the computer model based on the new algorithm produced reliable mean travel times on road segments with lengths between 5 and 10 kilometres. Theoretical analysis confirmed that after further refinement and optimisation, accuracy can be increased by 10-15%. The presence of neither an on/off ramp nor a traffic jam between the measuring sites had any effect on the accuracy of the model. For the covering abstract see IRRD 867248.
