Abstract

Woods (1) has shown that p-aminobenzoic acid (PABA) antagonizes the sulfanilamide inhibition of bacterial growth. Lampen and Jones (2) found that pteroylglutamic acid (folic acid) and related compounds are also active antagonists of sulfonamide inhibition of certain microorganisms. They concluded from their results that t,he inhibition of bacterial growt,h by sulfonamides was caused by interference in the synthesis of folic acid at the PABA site in the folic acid molecule.
