ABSTRACT Oncolites occur on subtidal asymmetrical, crescent-shaped Thalassia banks in a shallow lagoon near Pease Bay, Grand Cayman Island. All the oncolites, which lack a nucleus and have only vague internal laminations, are formed of fine to coarse sand-sized grains held together by sheaths of mucilage and algal filaments. Micrite, a common component of most oncolites, is rare in the Caymanian examples. The micrite that is present probably resulted from micritization associated with algae boring into the grains.
