Abstract Some mutants of bacteriophage T4 selected for their inability to replicate in the presence of hydroxyurea are defective in the degradation of host DNA. Nine such mutants which all map in the same locus (the denA locus) were all deficient in the induction of T4 endonuclease II. We conclude that this enzyme is involved in the breakdown of cellular DNA.
