Third-generation database system manifesto

Abstract

We call the older hierarchical and network systems first generation datftha~ systems and refer to the current collection of relmional systems as the second generation. In this paper we consider the characteristics that must be ~ri~fied by the next generation of data managexs, which we call third generation database systems.
