Abstract Four carefully selected sections across the Frasnian-Famennian (F-F) boundary beds in basin, slope, carbonate-platform and nearshore environments were studied in South China. The result shows that the levels of extinction in these sections may be within the Lower triangularis Zone. Sedimentary change is clearly recorded in the interval from the Upper gigas to the Middle triangularis Zones. The geological anomalies recorded in one section occurred within the Famennian crepida Zone and did not coincide with a major change in fauna.
