The purpose of this article is to highlight the key ideas that are embodied in the TRANSYT and SCOOT methods of coordinating signals. It will explain how the SCOOT system of traffic-responsive control evolved from TRANSYT and conclude by reviewing some of the future directions of TRRL research.
