Changes in the context within which higher education operates are obliging European institutions to address the provision of academic guidance and student support. Previous guidance models, and student counselling services are under review in many institutions. In many cases, the provision of guidance if disociated from the teaching activity, is reported to have collapsed or to be in crisis and institutions are seeking new ways of delivering alternative or complementary features to the old model (personal tutoring, integrated tutoring, guided projects). All the contributions, including this article, acknowledge that flexibility, growing diversity and expansion of tutorial activities provide a significant impetus for a change in teaching
