Onchocerciasis, also known as ‘river blindness’, is an insect-borne disease, caused by a nematode worm, Onchorcerca volvulus. It is the world's second leading infectious cause of blindness. In most of these countries it constitutes a public health problem and a serious obstacle to socio-economic development.
