Abstract Since sandy and acidic rice-growing soil, which is derived from lateritic materials, extends along sea coast and around the sloping grounds of mountains in Ceylon, there occurs very often the malnutrition of rice plants in silica and bases. As a result of the soil survey, silica and magnesium deficiency in rice has been pointed out to be of great concern next to phosphorus deficiency for improving rice production in this country (5).
