The elemental environment and causes of acid formation are discussed to establish a basis for water pollution abatement or control. Isolation is the preferred treatment where hydrologic conditions are favorable; or liming is considered as a second choice. For flooded mines sulfate-reducing bacteria deserves testing. Sealing of mines to forestall oxidation by excluding air is seen as too costly.
