Abstract

SUMMARY Miserotoxin, a toxic nitrosugar found in 3 varieties of timber milkvetch ( Astragalus miser Dougl. ex Hook.), was incubated in bovine and ovine ruminal fluids for 1 to 4 hours and then was chromatographed on silica gel thin-layer plates. Miserotoxin metabolized to 3-Nitro-1-Propanol (3-NPOH) in ruminal fluid of both cattle and sheep. Other nitro-compounds from miserotoxin were not detected. These data offer further proof that 3-NPOH was the principal toxic metabolite of miserotoxin formed after poisonous varieties of timber milkvetch were ingested by ruminants.
