The paper establishes a practical and simple approach that can be applied directly in a pavement thickness design method. The fatigue behavior of a range of mix types, representative of base course and wearing course mixes in various countries, has been evaluated. The various fatigue curves obtained have been reduced to a few representative curves. For practical design purposes the permissible strain value can be determined easily from these curves. Some examples of design curves, based on the asphalt fatigue strain criterion, for a few typical mixes possessing similar stiffness values but different fatigue properties, are given.
