Immersion in I, vapour (Brante, 1949; Marini-Bettolo-Marconi & Guarino, 1950) proved a useful general method, giving yellowish or brown spots with choline and its esters and succinic acid. The carboxylic ester reagent (Whittaker & Wijesundera, 1952) was used to detect the succinyl- choline esters, and bromothymol blue, used as described by Brown (1950), detected succinylmonocholine and succinic acid as yellow spots. Whatman no. 4 ifiter paper was used throughout.
